ABOUT MARTY
> fitness for an active life
I see myself as a mobility coach. If you
move better, you feel better. How you move
speaks volumes, and being agile and
flexible is key to enjoying a healthy
lifestyle. Growing older and feeling
broken is not inevitable. In fact, it is a
myth that we decline as we age. By
being present and aware of our movement
patterns you can greatly impact how
you think and feel.
I have been teaching Pilates for over
nine years in the St. Croix Valley.
Drawing on my training and certification in Z Health, Russian Kettlebells, Stott
Pilates and additional training in yoga-infused Pilates, stability ball and Qigong,
I've developed an integrated, holistic approach to physical conditioning.
My own interest in Z Health, Kettlebells and Pilates is similar to many of my clients:
Growing up and throughout my 20's, I enjoyed an active life. After earning
degrees in Economics, International Relations, a Masters in Management and
Administration, and working in the business world, I chose to stay home and raise
my children. After the birth of my second child, an old neck injury reappeared
and I found myself practically disabled. Physical therapy, chiropractic care, and
swimming were somewhat helpful, but they were unable to completely alleviate my
neck pain, so I tried a "new" exercise called Pilates. While the results were not
immediate, I steadily gained strength and learned to move my body using proper
form.
The results I was getting personally motivated me to become an instructor and
teach others. I chose to go through the rigor of becoming a Stott-Certified
instructor to learn more about the physiology of my students, many of whom also
had physical injuries. I work to tailor my training to their personal conditioning
needs.
After teaching Pilates for 6 years, I felt that I wasn't getting as much strength
training and cardio into my workouts as I wanted. Knowing that running was not
for me, and not being incredibly motivated to lift weights, I was looking for
something different. I had been hearing about Kettlebells and decided to give it a
try. The results were immediate and I was excited to find a fitness program that
so perfectly complements my Pilates training. I then decided to receive training
and certification in the highly demanding Russian Kettlebell Challenge
Certification (RKC) program. I have since continued and received my RKC
Level II certification.
Since receiving my RKC II, I found that many of my clients were having movement
problems. Whether they had pain, limited mobility, or just not being able to
accomplish a particular movement goal, I was inspired to pursue a Level IV
Certification in Z-Health training. How well our body moves has a major
impact on our physical, emotional and spiritual life. Z-Health is a
neurologically-based training approach, designed to help you build and rebuild
the body you have always known you could have. It helps to maximize health and
performance in daily life as well as at work and in sports.
What I love about Pilates is that it gives me the foundation of knowledge about
my body, teaching me to engage my core and how to hold my body. Kettlebells
takes it to the next step, offering me a whole body workout, including cardio,
strength training, and core conditioning. Best of all, they are both efficient and
they require a mind body connection that allows you to get fantastic results. And
finally, Z Health is the holistic and scientific approach to the rehabilitation of
injury and the development of movement excellence. Being strong is great, but if
you don't move well through good joint mobility, your body won't respond to your
workouts and pain will eventually develop if it hasn't already.
I believe in adapting instruction to meet each client's existing fitness level, helping
them develop skills at their own pace. I feel it's imperative to honor one's body,
acknowledging where you are currently, and setting realistic goals. The key is to
learn to listen to yourself and apply what you are learning to your own situation.
My goal is to help clients develop a healthy lifestyle by transferring what is
learned in class to their day-to-day activities therefore enhancing their overall
well-being.
Feel free to contact me with any questions about Z Health, Kettlebells or Pilates.
I look forward to meeting you!
